The ultimate heart stone, the stone of unconditional love! Rose quartz has, for hundreds of years, been heralded as a talisman of the positivity of love and relationships. The beauty of the dusky pink quartz has incorporated its rosy, mythical properties into ancient legend as far back as 600- 700 BC.
The crystal is an enabling stone that encourages you to start the growth of love from within. As if you don’t find acceptance and love within yourself from the start then it is ultimately going to be difficult to transfer that loving energy onto someone else. Or for another being to turn to you for love.
This is one of the reasons why the rose quartz has been a highly significant stone within the beliefs and mindset of civilizations going way back in time.
This is not an extensive history of the Rose Quartz crystal. Its rather a dip into the myths and facts that have fascinated the team at International Crystals. Something which we thought we would share with you!
Adonis, Aphrodite and Rose Quartz
The Greek myths and legends are bountiful in the tales of lust, love, passion and despair. One such tale tells the story of how Rose Quartz became a symbolic stone for a love reconciled and rejuvenated.
Ares was the Greek God of War and was also the husband of the beauty that was Aphrodite. The Goddess of Love who signified all things beautiful. Ares established a fierce jealousy and hatred for the God of Fertility. Adonis who also happened to play a leading role in Aphrodite’s heart as her lover.
So incensed with this jealousy, Ares turned himself into a wild, ferocious boar and attacked Adonis unmercifully, so fatally wounding him. Aphrodite was so distressed by the attack and the wounding of Adonis that she ran to his side and once there, caught herself on a briar bush and drew blood. That blood blended with the blood of Adonis and fell onto some nearby quartz staining it a dusky pink signifying the symbolic hues of rose quartz.
Zeus, seeing the sorrow of love lost, took pity on the torn lovers and decreed to bring back Adonis to Aphrodite for six months of every year. The blood stained quartz bloomed into the beauty of the rose quartz which became a symbol of the love shared, lost and then renewed by Zeus. This symbol has continued through the ages into the present day.
Cupid, Eros and Rose Quartz
The story is told in another Greek legend that the God of love. Cupid, along with his partner in love Eros carried the rose quartz stone into human civilisation with the goal of spreading the loving energy and desire of the stone into the world.
The rose quartz crystal is still used for this purpose to this very day. Sealing and spreading loving vibes, strengthening relationships and desires and creating compassion within.
Isis and Egyptian Legend
Immersed with the strength and power of the definitive femininity, Isis was revered as the Egyptian Goddess of Life. She was the symbol of the standards to emulate as a wife and mother and the love and devotion required to reach and maintain these standards.
The tale is told that Isis utilised the cleansing powers of rose quartz in her daily beauty routine. She took the rose quartz specimens found in the shale of rivers and used them to cleanse her face using the circular, upward motions that are still popular to this day. It was believed that using the rose quartz as a facial scrub would keep the skin firm and rejuvenated, therefore sustaining the beauty of the feminine face.
When this beauty routine was complete, it is said that Isis would leave and a stone would be dropped from the heavens to mark the spot so Isis knew where to return for her cleansing routine. The Temple of Isis in Philae in Egypt was erected in the reign of Nectanebo I during 380-362 BC and was solely dedicated to this revered Egyptian Goddess.
Rose Quartz: Did You Know?
One of the magnificent buttes in the monumental American attraction, the Grand Canyon, is named the Isis Temple after the Goddess who maintained her beauty using rose quartz. No one knows why it was named so and speculation is rife about what early explorers may have found when naming the formation as it is infused with vertical seams of dull rose quartz.
In the Oriental cultures, Rose Quartz is a highly revered stone for its ability to connect with higher spiritual frequency channels. It is honoured in the East and is a major stone for the use of ornate carving in China to this day.

Kyanite is a blue mineral of the silicate variety that is mainly sourced from aluminium rich metamorphic pegamites and also in sedimentary rock.
It occurs in schist, quartz, pegmatite and gneiss veins as the result of high pressure metamorphism of pelitic rock. In the sedimentary rocks it occurs in the form of detrital grains.
All crystals belong to a different group according to the basis of the relationships of their axes. There are 7 systems and 32 classes of symmetry. Kyanite crystals belong to the Triclinic system.
History – the past considered as a whole, the whole series of past events connected with someone or sometihing, a continuous typically chronological record of importance.
The name Kyanite is taken from the Greek word Kuanos which means deep blue.
Ancient myth tells that when Kyanite was suspended from human hair it could trace the magnetic force of the earth in a similar way to the needle of a compass. This belief caused many travellers to carry Kyanite on long journeys or when exploring new territories.
Kyanite deposits can be found in Canada, Brazil, Austria, Zimbabwe, Switzerland and the US among others and is mined largely for industrial purposes.
The stone is used extensively in ceramic and refractory products which includes dishware and porcelain plumbing fixtures . It is also used in abrasives, electrical insulators and electronics.
Specification – the act of describing or identifying something precisely, a detailed description of the design and materials used to make something.
Kyanite is formed in long flat prisms and has a fibrous, brittle fracture with a weak, red fluorescence. It is opaque with a vitreous to pearly luster and is distinctive in that one crystal can encompass a duo level of hardness. On the Mohs scale it is described as a scale of 4.5 -5 parallel to one axis with a hardness scale of 6.5-7 perpendicular to that axis.
Kyanite is enhanced through cutting, tumbling and polishing and is mainly used for industrial purposes due to its refraction qualities.
Varieties – a number or range of things of the same general class that are different or distinct in character or quality.
Kyanite is referred to in a variety of ways, including but not limited to;
Disthene
Cyanite
Rhaeticite
The stone is also associated with
Andalucite
Talc
Silimanite
Gedrite
Corundum
Mullite

Jade or Nephrite derives its name from the Greek word “nephros” meaning kidney. Jade was long considered an “imperial gem”. Jade has long been an esteemed majestic stone in the Chinese empire similar to diamonds and gold in western countries. Widely considered an elite stone it was presented to the Chinese imperial court where skilled artisans turned them into masterpieces. Jade was widely used in the making of Chinese scholars’ objects like calligraphy brushes, mouthpieces and opium pipes. Nephrite jade can be found in China for utilitarian and ceremonial purposes, from indoor and decorative items to jade burial sites. Indigenous tribes in Mexico, central and South America and New Zealand carved jade into deity masks and ritual artefacts.
Jade is comprised of metamorphic rocks called silicate minerals called Nephrite and Jadeite. These are then classified into grades in the ABC Treatment System. Nephrite is a calcium magnesium silicate while jadeite is a sodium aluminium silicate. Each has different compositions, hardness, densities and crystal structures.
Nephrite is usually a creamy white form, mid to deep olive green, brown and black. It has a smooth surface polish and the most common form of jade. Jadeite comes in blue, lavender mauve, pink and emerald green. Different colours were imported to Burma in 1800. It is hard and lustrous, rarer than Nephrite and more valuable. Imperial Jade is the rarest and most treasured form.

The name beryl is derived from a number of languages including Latin, old French, Middle English, Greek, Prakrit, German and Dutch.
Beryl is a mineral composed of beryllium aluminium cyclosilicate. They are hexagonal crystals and rarely come in terminated form. Beryl often crystallizes in a perfect six sided hexagons, their crystals are individual prismatic hexagons. The can appear in short stubby form or tabular and plates. The bases of beryls are flat and pyramidal terminations are rare.
Pure beryl is transparent to opaque and colourless but often tinted by impurities. Green beryl heat treated can produce a sky blue aquamarine colour.
Beryl comes in various colours in granitic pegmatites but also occurs in mic schist in the Ural Mountains and limestone in Colombia.it is found in Europe Norway Austria Germany and Sweden Ireland Russia Brazil Colombia Madagascar Mozambique South Africa USA and Zambia.
Beryl has two varieties which include aquamarine, maxixe, emerald, golden beryl, yellow helidor, goshenite, pink morganite and red beryl. Pure beryl is colourless, it is the impurities which cause it to colour in variety.
Aquamarine is the second most popular gem beryl. It has a distinct greenish blue to blue colour which is caused by iron oxides within the chemical makeup of the stone. Light coloured stone in this colour range are still called aquamarine. The stone that are richly coloured are the most sought after. The pale stone are made for inexpensive jewellery.
