The types of Amber vary due to the degree and mix of chemical compounds and, as Amber originates as a soft and sticky resin mass that transforms to copal, it can also contain traces of plant and animal inclusions.
Amber can be found along coasts as it is cast up from the seafloor and dredged or mined from underground galleries. When extracted, nodules of blue earth are removed, and its opaque crust either eroded or removed by sand and water.

A subdivision of Feldspar is Alkali Feldspar which is typically rich in potassium, and from this evolves the Microcline type, which is mainly white or pale yellow. In rare cases, the Microcline may appear a blue | green colour which is then termed as the semi-precious stone, Amazonite.
Amazonite is created in sedimentary and metamorphic rocks when potassium-rich hot silica acid changes from a liquid | gas formation into a solid compound. The blue | green colour is determined by traces of lead and water that remain in the silica acid.

The earliest reference to Amazonite is in the Egyptian Book of the Dead, which dates back to 3400 BCE, which recommends green feldspar (the earlier name for Amazonite) as an amulet in various parts of the text.

The word “quartz” comes from the German “Quarz” which is a Slavic origin. Quartz is regarded as the mystical substance mabanin Australian Aboriginal mythology. There are many accounts of how Chalcedony was given the name. Some say it derived from the town of Chalcedon in Asia Minor and others associate it with the Greek word Khalkedon which is found in the Book of Revelation.
It is a hapax legmemon which means that the word appears only once and is not found anywhere else so it is unclear whether the stone is actually the same stone we know today.
The actual name, Chalcedony, derives from the Latin chalcedonius and it is found in Pliny the Elder’s Naturalis Historia where it is referred to as a term for a translucid form of Jaspis. Jaspis is an opaque, impure type of silica.
The Mediterranean region used Chalcedony as early as the Bronze Age and it was widely used along the Central Asian trading routes. It was popular as hot wax would not stick to it so it was often used to make impressions for seals.
In the 19th Century the area of Idar Oberstein in Germany became the largest global chalcedony processing centre, receiving agates from as far as Latin America.

Covellite derives its name from its founder Nicholas Covelli who first found them in Italy. Covellite is a rare copper sulphide mineral. It is a copper based stone. The mineral is associated with chalcocite. It is commonly found with and occurs as coatings on chalcocite, chalcopyrite, bornite, enargite and pyrite.
It is commonly found as a secondary copper mineral in deposits. It forms in weathering environments near the surface in deposits where copper is the primary sulphide. It also forms as descending surface water in the supergene enrichment zone oxidizes and redeposits covellite on hypogene sulphides.
