Alexandrite

Alexandrite – Gemzworld Crystals Encyclopedia

Alexandrite – This is our research and findings on this mineral

Origin – The place or situation from which something comes, the beginning of existence, the point from which it starts, the thing from which it is ultimately derived.

Alexandrite is an extremely rare gemstone initially discovered in the Sanarka River in Russia’s southern Ural Mountains.

The chemical composition exhibits Chrysoberyl’s variants consisting of a chrysoberyl cats eye and transparent Chrysoberyl, yet has chromium as an impurity along with iron and titanium, which accounts for its distinctive ability to change colour. Only this type of Chrysoberyl that can display these colour changes is Alexandrite.

Alexandrite is a strongly pleochroic | trichroic gem that changes colour about the light source. In daylight, they can be green (Russian) before switching to red in incandescent light.

All crystals belong to a different group according to the basis of the relationships of their axes. There are seven systems and 32 classes of symmetry. Alexandrite crystals belong to the orthorhombic system.

History – the past considered whole, the whole series of past events connected with someone or something, a continuous typically chronological record of importance.

Alexandrite has a recently modern history, documented as being discovered in Russia’s Ural Mountains as late as the 1830s.

The gem is said to have been named after the Russian Tzar Alexander. As it displays the red and green colours symbolic of Imperial Russia’s old stains, it became the national stone of Tzarist Russia.

Top-quality mined Alexandrite was extremely rare and, as the Russian mines depleted, was extremely scarce. A similar hue was found later in Brazilian mines in the 1980s yet were not as great as the quality of colour that the Russian gems possessed.

Jewellers highly seek the stone of a quality comparable to the Russian one due to its aesthetic value and rarity. Specialist dealers mainly supply it.

Specification – the act of describing or identifying something precisely, a detailed description of the design and materials used to make something.

Alexandrite has a good hardness of 8.5 on the MOH’s scale and is valued in relation to the more significant distinction of colour change from green to red. Some of the less valued Alexandrite’s change from green to a brownish colour instead.

The crystals feature cyclic twins called trillings which have a hexagonal appearance however are featured due to the formation of a triplet of twins at distinctive angles.

Natural Alexandrite gems are rarely found in jewellery due to their value and scarcity; however, synthetic lab-formed types are available on a more common basis.

Varieties – A number or range of things of the same general class that are different or distinct in character or quality.

Alexandrite is a type of Chrysoberyl and so falls in with other Crysoberyl types, including:

  • Yellowish-Green Chrysoberyl
  • Cats Eye or Cymomphane

However, the only other variety of Alexandrite is created synthetically or simulated to replicate Alexandrite through corundum traced with elements like vanadium.

Esoteric Attributes: A quality or feature as characteristic of or possed by something.

Crystals, by their very nature, can receive and focus energy in different ways. Their molecular structure enables them to be used to amplify and convert energy. Hence, crystals have been used for centuries to aid healing and transmute energy both in the metaphysical and physical world.

Because each crystal family has different formational backgrounds, each also has different vibrational frequencies that can be harnessed and used for specific purposes. Each, therefore, has particular qualities that can be used to help a person heal on the many different levels of their being.

The following is a list of healing attributes associated with Alexandrite crystals.

Mental: Alexandrite is said to strengthen willpower and inspiration. It promotes imaginative powers igniting confidence in risk-taking and a more excellent perception of the inner voice.

Emotional: Alexandrite intensifies and heightens dreams and heightens the perception of emotion.

Physical: The Alexandrite gem is known to stimulate the liver and aid physical inflammations. It is also an aid for nerve disorders and to strengthen the senses.

Amber

Amber – Gemzworld Crystals Encyclopedia

Origin – the place or situation from which something comes, the beginning of something’s existence, the point from which it starts, the thing from which it is ultimately derived.

Amber is derived from fossilised tree resin and can also be found in coal seams, where it is termed as resinite. Therefore not technically a Crystal

The types of Amber vary due to the degree and mix of chemical compounds and, as Amber originates as a soft and sticky resin mass that transforms to copal, it can also contain traces of plant and animal inclusions.

Amber can be found along coasts as it is cast up from the seafloor and dredged or mined from underground galleries. When extracted, nodules of blue earth are removed, and its opaque crust either eroded or removed by sand and water.

Amber is amorphous rather than crystalline and has a very low density, enabling it to float in saltwater. The leading source is in the Samland Coastal area of Prussia, which is known as the Kaliningrad Oblast of Russia. (changed in 1946)

History – the past considered whole, the whole series of past events connected with someone or something, a continuous typically chronological record of importance.

The name is derived from Arabic and referred originally to ambergris. It has sometimes been called Kahroba, which is a Persian term meaning that attracts straw.

Its source shores are the Baltic sea, yet it has been found on Neolithic sites away from source surmised due to trade routes established before the bronze age.

It is widely used in jewellery and more intriguingly for the mouth peace of pipes. The Turks use it in this regard as they say it is incapable of spreading infection when passing the lines from mouth to mouth.

Specification – the act of describing or identifying something precisely, a detailed description of the design and materials used to make something.

Amber is unusual in that the resin can contain exquisitely preserved plant structures, organisms, bugs and crustaceans. Anything that became covered by the resin when before it fossilised. The cavities shown in Amber are said to be where these organisms have disappeared.

Amber appears in various colours that, apart from the famous orange, yellow/brown, can range from white to almost black or, in rare cases, red, blue and green.

It usually appears in a translucent form that can be easily cut and polished for jewellery.

Varieties – A number or range of things of the same general class that are different or distinct in character or quality.

The types of Amber mainly refer to its colour of geographical source. These include:

  • Baltic Amber
  • Black Amber
  • Copal
  • Delatynite
  • Blue Amber
  • Dominican Amber

Clear Quartz

quartzcluster1

Origin

The word “quartz” comes from the German “Quarz” which is a Slavic origin. Quartz is regarded as the mystical substance maban in Australian Aboriginal mythology. The crystal can be found in many passage tombs in Europe. In prehistoric Ireland it was used for stone tools, the Irish word for quartz is grian cloch meaning “stone of the sun”. Clear Quartz has been valued by many civilisations as far back as Atlantis and the Egyptians.

Quartz is the second most abundant mineral in the earth’s crust after fieldspar. It is composed of a framework of silicon-oxygen tetrahedral with each oxygen being shared between two tetrahedral.

Quartz belongs to the trigonal formation system. An ideal crystal shape is six sided prism terminating with six sided prisms at each end. Nicolas Stenos study of quartz revealed quartz crystals size and shape to have long prism faces always joined at a perfect 60 degree angle.

Well-formed crystals usually form in a bed with unconstrained growth. Doubly terminated crystals forms occur where they develop freely without attachment.

A quartz geode is such a situation where the void is approximately spherical in shape, lined with a bed of crystals pointing inward.

Quartz crystals have piezoelectric properties; they develop an electric potential upon the application of mechanical stress.

Not all varieties of quartz are naturally occurring, some can be treated used heat or gamma-irradiation to induce colour.

Quartz is a vital constituent of granite and other felsic igneous rocks. It is most common in sedimentary rocks such as sandstone, shale, carbonate rocks, schist, gneiss, quartzite and other metamorphic rocks.

A major area of mining for quartz is the Spruce Pine Gem Mine in Spruce Pine, North Carolina in the U.S.

There are many varieties of quartz which include Chalcedony, Agate, Onyx, Jasper, Aventurine, Tiger’s Eye, Rock Crystal, Amethyst, Citrine, Prasiolite, Rose Quartz, Rutilated Quartz, Milky Quartz, Smoky Quartz, Carnelian, and Dumortierite Quartz.

Physical

Enhances energy flow, reduces swelling and pain.  Helpful to stop bleeding and has a soothing and positive effect on the skin.  Clear quartz reawakens those parts of the body that have been asleep, paralysed, numb or cold.

Emotional

Emotionally clear quartz supports our limitations and boundaries.  It helps to allow our left and right brain hemispheres to work in harmony.

Attributes

Known as the master healer, clear quartz opens ones intuition and strengthens our own point of view.  It encourages development for our inner growth.  Clear quartz opens us up to the knowledge we thought we had lost.  It is also a stone for enhancement.

Native Americans to this day still place a clear quartz crystal in the crib or cradle of a new born. Clear quartz enhances the power and effect of other crystals.

Clear Quartz is a most common crystal known as “The Master Healer”. It energizes and activates your chakras. It amplifies the energy of any other gemstone it touches, making it an ideal crystal to use with others. When a cluster absorbs negative energy  there is no need to cleanse it as the crystal dissipates the negativity itself due to the different vibrations of all the crystals vibrating together which act as a natural form of cleansing.

Clear Quartz can be programmed to assist you in manifesting things you desire.

Clear Quartz strengthens all positive forces within you encouraging positive steps for personal growth. It aids in amplifying intentions, reducing stress, centring whilst protecting you by enhancing white light. It brings strength and clarity to the mind, aiding concentration and memory retention. It raises energies to the highest level while enhancing psychic ability and intuition.

It is an ideal crystal for gridding and conducive for understanding messages in dreams. It is also a respected stone for death in many cultures

Hematite

Hematite with Magnetite – International Crystals Encyclopedia https://www.gemzworld.com/

Originthe place or situation from which something comes, the beginning of something’s existence, the point from which it starts out, the thing from which it is ultimately derived.
Hematite is the mineral form of one of the types of iron oxides. It is determined as iron (III) oxide which has the chemical formula Fe2O3.

Hematite, found in banded iron formations, can occur from volcanic activity though it is often found due to the precipitation of water where it can form in layers in standing water like springs or lakes.

When weathering processes occur in soil then clay sized hematite crystals can occur. This can bring our the redish streak of colour often found in older , weathered soils.

All crystals belong to a different group according to the basis of the relationships of their axes. There are 7 systems and 32 classes of symmetry. Hematite crystals belong to the Trigonal system.

Historythe past considered as a whole, the whole series of past events connected with someone or sometihing, a continuous typically chronological record of importance.
The name Hematite derives from the Greek word blood which is a reference to the reddish streak that forms through weathering. The ancient Greek name for Hematite termed it as a blood red stone and this name was transposed to the latin Lapis Haematites which in turn was taken up by Middle French which used the term Hématite Pierre.

Hematite was used as a pigment where it was taken from the hematite covered ochre clay. It was one of the earliest forms of writing pigment, used as red chalk over 164,000 years ago in South Africa by the Pinnacle Point man. Chalk mines were found in poland dating back to 5000 BC and also in old graveyards from up to 80,000 years ago. The mineral has also been referenced with the Linear Pottery Culture in the BC age, located at the Upper Rhine.

It was widely used in jewellery in the Victorian era and also in the craft of gilding as well as in other creative crafts.

Specificationthe act of describing or identifying something precisely, a detailed description of the design and materials used to make something.
Hematite has penetration and tamellar twinning with no cleavage. It has an uneven or sub-conchoidal fracture with a brittle tenacity. The mineral is opaque with a metallic to splendant luster. Hematite has magnetic qualities which weakens according to the size of the item.

The mineral is used in arts and for the purposes of adornment and jewellery.

Dioptase

Dioptase – International Crystals Encyclopedia https://www.gemzworld.com/

Originthe place or situation from which something comes, the beginning of something’s existence, the point from which it starts out, the thing from which it is ultimately derived.
Dioptase is a relatively uncommon copper cyclosilicate that forms as a secondary mineral within copper sulfide mineral deposits that occur with an oxidized zone.

It is uncommon as it only occurs in dry climates where acids are buffered by carbonate and, over time, tiny, minute particles of silica reacts with dissolved copper to form the crystal.

All crystals belong to a different group according to the basis of the relationships of their axes. There are 7 systems and 32 classes of symmetry. Dioptase crystals belong to the Trigonal system.

Historythe past considered as a whole, the whole series of past events connected with someone or sometihing, a continuous typically chronological record of importance.
Dioptase has a documentated history that stretches back to around 7200 BC. This is known due to the discovery at Ain Ghazal of three pre-neolithic B lime plaster statues known as Noah, Heifa and Micah. The statues’ eyes were highlighted at the edges with the green Dioptase.

Khazakstan deposits were discovered in the late 18th Century in copper mines that contained veins of emerald green, transparent crystals. It was orignally thought to be emeralds but on analysis it was determined that it was too soft.

The crystal was eventually named by the French mineralogist, Fr Rene Just Hauy, after the Greek terms dia and optos. These terms mean through and visible and refer to the duo of cleavage directions that can be seen in unbroken types of Dioptase.

Specificationthe act of describing or identifying something precisely, a detailed description of the design and materials used to make something.
Dioptase has a cleavage that is perfect in three directions. It is transparent to transluscent with a vitreous luster. The stone has a conchoidal fracture and is very brittle with a mid hardness on the Mohs scale of 5.

The stone is popular with collectors and is sometimes used to create small gems that are emerald like in appearance. It is not used extensively in jewellery due to its brittleness and fragility. It can also be ground into a pigment for painting.

Charoite

Charoite – International Crystals Encyclopedia https://www.gemzworld.com/
Originthe place or situation from which something comes, the beginning of something’s existence, the point from which it starts out, the thing from which it is ultimately derived.
The Charoite crystal is very rare and reportedly only recently discovered in the last 100 years.

It is a silicate mineral that is produced as a potassium feldspar metasomatite when a syenite of the Murunskii Massif intrudes into limestone deposits, thus forming and altering the said deposits. The crystal occurs in association with canasite and tinaksite.

All crystals belong to a different group according to the basis of the relationships of their axes. There are 7 systems and 32 classes of symmetry. Charoite crystals belong to the Monoclinic system.

Historythe past considered as a whole, the whole series of past events connected with someone or sometihing, a continuous typically chronological record of importance.
Charoite was reportedly discovered in the 1940’s yet was only documented officially in 1978.

There are two explanations for how the crystal obtained its name. One is due to its location being close to the Chara River area of Russia, whilst another explanation is that the name deriviation is from the word Chary which means charms or magic in Russian. The main deposits are located in the Murun mountains of Russia.

Specificationthe act of describing or identifying something precisely, a detailed description of the design and materials used to make something.
Charoite appears as spiraly strands of fibrous type material and the colours range from dark purple to lilac with wavy streaks of various colour associated with orange tinaksite, black augite and transparent microline feldspar.

The crystal appears as vitreous to pearly and has a choncoidal fracture. It is sometimes transluscent and can employ a weak fluorescence.

The stone is very attractive and is used extensively in jewellery and also in carvings for boxes and vases.

Varietiesa number or range of things of the same general class that are different or distinct in character or quality.
Charoite is a very distinct crystal and so is not usually associated with types or varieties. It can sometimes appear similar to stones like:

  • Tiger’s Eye
  • Sodalite
  • Sugilite
  • Lapis Lazuli

Citrine

Citrine – International Crystals Encyclopedia https://www.gemzworld.com/

Originthe place or situation from which something comes, the beginning of something’s existence, the point from which it starts out, the thing from which it is ultimately derived.
Citrine is a yellow variety of Quartz which belongs to one of the largest family of minerals; silicates.

Citrine is a crystal of primary formation which means it was formed from molten magma. This usualy happens in cavities in volcanoes where the combination of chemistary and structural arrangements of mineral deposits, atoms and substances pass from gas or liquid into a solid state or by means of going out of solution by precipitation or evaporation. This process creates silica acid which in turn cools to Quartz crystals which, when trace particles of iron infiltrate, turns into Citrine.

Though Citrine occurs naturally, it is widely man made when amethysts or smoky quartz are heat treated at high temperatures so that the colour appears similar to citrine. These burnt citrines may contain indiscernable stripes, whereas natural Citrine gives a more cloudy appearance.

All crystals belong to a different group according to the basis of the relationships of their axes. There are 7 systems and 32 classes of symmetry. Citrine crystals belong to the Trigonal system.

Historythe past considered as a whole, the whole series of past events connected with someone or sometihing, a continuous typically chronological record of importance.
The Citrine name was assigned to yellow quartz in 1546. The name is derived from the Latin Citrina, which means yellow. It was known as a merchent stone and was said to attract prosperity for their owner.

The history of the stone being documented is unclear as throughout it has been mistaken and traded as other stones such as gold and smoky topaz.

The natural stones are widely sought and are quite rare. They are mostly found around amethyst mines with the most important natural deposits sourced within the US, Madagascar and Brazil.

Specificationthe act of describing or identifying something precisely, a detailed description of the design and materials used to make something.
Natural Citrine appears cloudy or smoky. It is vitreous and transparent with a very brittle conchoidal fracture. It can sometimes have a white streak.

Citrine made from heat treated smoky quartz or amethyst can appear to have slight bands running through the stone. It is very hard to tell the difference and is ususally only discernable by gem specialists.

Varietiesa number or range of things of the same general class that are different or distinct in character or quality.
Citrine is a type of Quartz of the yellow variety. It can sometimes be associated with Ametrine, Amethyst, Smoky Quartz and Gold Quartz.
