Agate derives its name from the Greek philosopher and naturalist who discovered the stone along the river Achates’ shoreline in the 3rd century BC.
Many colourful agates and chalcedonies were obtained from the river now called Dirillo in Sicily.

Obsidian is a naturally formed volcanic glass that originates as extrusive, igneous rock.
The formation is as a result of rapid volcanic cooling with minimal crystal growth. Felsic lava with a high silica content moves within what is known as an obsidan flow and the low crystal growth is caused by a high viscosity and polymerization degree that inhibits atomic diffusion.
Classed as a rock, rather than a mineral as it is formed from a variety of minerals like feldspar and hematite as minor minerals to the major mineral; volcanic glass.

Falcon’s eye is a blue black to blue green opaque gemstone variety of fibrous quartz. All Tiger Eye is chatoyant which derives from the French language for “cat’s eye”. In the middle ages, the Falcons Eye was worn for protection as an amulet against witchcraft, demons and the evil eye.
Some stones with a higher oxidized iron are more bluish brown colour. It is typically multi-coloured with golden stripes or wavy patterns. It is an opaque fibrous aggregate, variety of microcrystalline quartz. It displays an iridescence that enhances its silky luster.It is a pseudo morph of quartz meaning it changed from one mineral to another over time. Falcon’s eye was once crocidolite and changed to quartz. Crocidolite is a fibrous blue mineral; from the riebeckite family of amphibole silicates. It has a distinct composition, colour and chatoyancy with a silicon dioxide composition. It has a good hardness and durability. It has lower iron content than Tigers Eye.It is always cut to maximise its chatoyancy and associated closely with Tigers Eye and Pietersite.

The ancient Greek name for Hematite termed it as a blood red stone and this name was transposed to the latin Lapis Haematites which in turn was taken up by Middle French which used the term Hématite Pierre.
Hematite was used as a pigment where it was taken from the hematite covered ochre clay. It was one of the earliest forms of writing pigment, used as red chalk over 164,000 years ago in South Africa by the Pinnacle Point man. Jade or Nephrite derives its name from the Greek word “nephros” meaning kidney. Jade was long considered an “imperial gem”. Jade has long been an esteemed majestic stone in the Chinese empire similar to diamonds and gold in western countries. Widely considered an elite stone it was presented to the Chinese imperial court where skilled artisans turned them into masterpieces. Jade was widely used in the making of Chinese scholars’ objects like calligraphy brushes, mouthpieces and opium pipes. Nephrite jade can be found in China for utilitarian and ceremonial purposes, from indoor and decorative items to jade burial sites. Indigenous tribes in Mexico, central and South America and New Zealand carved jade into deity masks and ritual artefacts.
Jade is comprised of metamorphic rocks called silicate minerals called Nephrite and Jadeite. These are then classified into grades in the ABC Treatment System. Nephrite is a calcium magnesium silicate while jadeite is a sodium aluminium silicate. Each has different compositions, hardness, densities and crystal structures.
Nephrite is usually a creamy white form, mid to deep olive green, brown and black. It has a smooth surface polish and the most common form of jade. Jadeite comes in blue, lavender mauve, pink and emerald green. Different colours were imported to Burma in 1800. It is hard and lustrous, rarer than Nephrite and more valuable. Imperial Jade is the rarest and most treasured form.

Ancient myth tells that when Kyanite was suspended from human hair it could trace the magnetic force of the earth in a similar way to the needle of a compass. This belief caused many travellers to carry Kyanite on long journeys or when exploring new territories.
Kyanite deposits can be found in Canada, Brazil, Austria, Zimbabwe, Switzerland and the US among others and is mined largely for industrial purposes.

Leopard skin derives its name from old French word jasper meaning “spotted or speckled stone”. It is one of the oldest gemstones and is mentioned several times in the bible.
Leopard skin Jasper is an aggregate of micro quartz or chalcedony. Chalcedony is a fibrous variety of cryptocrystalline quartz and contains a monoclinic polymorph of quartz called moganite. Chalcedony is more soluble than quartz and finely grained. It is an impure variety of silica.

Azurite is a crystal of secondary formation that is formed from copper carbonate and found in the upper oxidised portions of copper ore. It is often found mixed with another copper carbonate mineral, Malachite which has a bright green colour compared to the deep blue of the Azurite.
The crystal can be produced in smaller forms by quickly mixing a few drops of copper sulfate solution with a saturated solution of sodium carbonate and leaving it to settle overnight. The weathering of copper ore deposits produces the natural version of Azurite.

The Carnelian crystal is a perfect pick-me-up stone. It is largely found in India and derives from a mineral of the Quartz family known as Chalcedony (Cryptocrystalline). Its name descends from the Latin word meaning flesh coloured. The stone is an agate class of chalcedony bearing protection energies. This second chakra stone varies from deep brown red to red orange hues.
Carnelian was once considered strictly the property of the noble class. People who held high social statuses were buried with this stone. Carnelian is one of the oldest stones used for jewellery dating back to 3000 BCE and was found in Egyptian tombs. It is one of the oldest protection stones acting as a guardian from negative forces and activates the first three chakras to bring a surge of life force and creative energies.
Carnelian is found primarily in India as well as various sites in South America, Brazil, India, Siberia and Germany. It is a variety of chalcedony. The most favourable are deep red to red orange hue in colour.

There are many accounts of how Chalcedony was given the name. Some say it derived from the town of Chalcedon in Asia Minor and others associate it with the Greek word Khalkedon which is found in the Book of Revelation.
It is a hapax legmemon which means that the word appears only once and is not found anywhere else so it is unclear whether the stone is actually the same stone we know today.
The actual name, Chalcedony, derives from the Latin chalcedonius and it is found in Pliny the Elder’s Naturalis Historia where it is referred to as a term for a translucid form of Jaspis. Jaspis is an opaque, impure type of silica.
The Mediterranean region used Chalcedony as early as the Bronze Age and it was widely used along the Central Asian trading routes. It was popular as hot wax would not stick to it so it was often used to make impressions for seals.
In the 19th Century the area of Idar Oberstein in Germany became the largest global chalcedony processing centre, receiving agates from as far as Latin America.
