Apatite is a group of phosphate minerals that are associated with fluorapatite, chlorapatite and hydroxylapatite with high levels of a variety of ions within. The gem stones are found in pegmatites or other igneous formations.

 

It is found in fossils and other sediments where it forms as masses, nodules and crystals. It is found frequently in marine deposits which are mined for phosphorous to be used in fertilisers. It can also be found as an accessory gem in other mining areas.

 

 

All crystals belong to a different group according to the basis of the relationships of their axes. There are 7 systems and 32 classes of symmetry. Apatite crystals belong to the Hexagonal system.

The name Apatite derives from the Greek word apatao which meands to decieve or delude.

 

Its defined history dates back to the 18th Century and its major sources are located in Brazil, Burma and Mexico.

Apatites have been created synthetically however the stones that are tumbled are fully natural and only enhanced through the tumbing, cutting and polishing methods.

 

The stone is columnar, thick tabular with an indistinct cleavage and a flourescence which varies. Colours range from no colour to a variety of pinks, yellows, green, violets and blue.

Physical: Apatites give strength to the physical body by aiding the healing of fractures, osteoporosis, arthrosis and rickets. It is also a strong aid as a de-acidifier.
